From a small room in the neighboring Oasis school to the 3rd floor of the
EEE block, then to the laboratory of the ECE block and now, to the spacious
and lavish spread of 527.31 sq mt. in the admin block, the library of GNITS is a house of learning by itself. It has a seating capacity of 150 members.
Write from its inception 13 years back the library developed extensively with the support of one technical and
few non-technical members and now it has strengthened itself to 4 non-technical
members.
The library has been the most integral part of the college from its existence.
The efforts to increase the 2000 volumes, 600 titles of 1997 – 98 to the
present 34709 volumes, 7780 titles contributes to the strength of this
temple of knowledge.
This shows an average increment of 2000 volumes per year!!
The college library has many journals for the students both technical
and general, which helps them with technical assistance and also
updates their information. It has 31 international journals in print version
and also an online subscription i.e., the INDEST AICTE. Among the Indian
journals,
46 are technical and 8 of them are general of which one is the in house
journal “WE” i.e., Women Empowerment of the H&BS
department. The library also has 8 Indian technical and 19 general magazines.
The staff and students can utilize the INTERNET facility for which 10
systems have been separately allotted. The extended timings of the library are
9AM – 6PM on the week days and 10.A.M to 1 P.M on sundays. The timings have been so adjusted so has to make them
student-friendly. The library functions on a very automated basis.
Three cards are issued to the students from the 1st year itself. The books are issued for a span of 14 days.
Daily, on an average 100 – 150 on normal days, and 300 – 400 users during
examination days, visit the library and utilize the facilities. Besides
this, a few more students and staff during the extended hours for their
project and research work through INTERNET are allowed in the library.
All faculty members are eligible for 6 library cards and non – teaching faculty members are issued 1 card. An additional 2 cards are issued to those staff members who are pursuing higher studies. All the transactions (issue & return)
are computerized.
The college library has been provided with the facility of an Open Access
Catalogue (OPAC) which let us know the present status of happening s
i.e., the number of books issued on a student’s name, the availability of
a book in the library, the number of books issued on that day. Thus making
things easier
for both staff and students. Four systems have been allotted for this
purpose.
The library maintains a record of the question papers of previous
exams and also the final year project work, to help students get some
guidance. Book exhibitions have been held by all the major publishers,
such as the Oxford Press, Cambridge University Press, PHI, Prentice Hall,
New Age, Asian, Higginbotham’s etc. Reprographic facility has also been
provided in the library to help students get a copy of the information
they need.
With so many facilities being provided and with the increasing number of volumes every year the journey for the library still seems to be going strong. Venue for an exclusive block for the library are on plans!!
